Skills development and the start of your professional training.

This course is designed to enhance the work of professionals in people-related work, and for those individuals who are interested in personal development and in learning counselling skills.

Personal development, self awareness and creative expression are central to the course. The focus of the programme is on developing participants’ counselling and psychotherapy skills of personal presence, and awareness of process. Attention is also paid to interpersonal and group skills. Our adult learners frequently describe the year as a life-changing experience, which many see as the most valuable outcome of taking the course.

No previous experience is necessary to embark on this Foundation Course. The programme provides an access opportunity if you wish to return to education after a break in your educational journey and/or if you have not benefited from previous educational opportunities.

The course also serves as a springboard for those who wish to pursue further professional training in this field, either in Counselling or Psychotherapy. All ICPPD courses build on these subject areas as they ultimately allow for the cultivation of an authentic relationship with clients.

Completion of the Foundation Certificate satisfies part of the criteria for entry onto the ICPPD professional Diploma in Holistic Counselling and Psychotherapy – three-year programme (a successful interview is also a requirement).

Attendance is expected on all course days. We realise that absence is sometimes unavoidable, so students must ensure that any gaps in their learning are addressed to the satisfaction of the course tutor. Insufficient attendance may prejudice continuation to a further stage.

The training is self-contained and can also be taken by anyone in the helping professions, to enhance their counselling skills and give them a substantial theoretical background in theories and approaches to psychotherapy.

Programme Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this programme you will be able to

  • communicate more effectively in your relationships, and develop your interpersonal skills for application within a therapeutic relationship
  • respectfully assert yourself in your dealings with others
  • reflect on your ability to change and make decisions and choices in your life
  • appreciate your self-worth as a person in your life-journey
  • appreciate the history and development of counselling and psychotherapy.

  • A written assignment on a topic related to the theory presented (1,500 words)
  • A 15 minute interview demonstrating your counselling skills on completion of skills training
